Essex Startups – Introduction to AI Automation

Table of Contents

Recently, I had the pleasure of running an AI training session for aspiring startups at Essex University. The room was filled with ambitious entrepreneurs working on everything from e-commerce platforms to cybersecurity solutions. In this post, I’ll break down the key tools and insights we covered, along with some additional tips that we didn’t have time to explore in the session.

Getting Started with AI Tools

During the session, one of the first things we discussed was the range of AI tools available. What surprised many participants was just how many powerful tools are available for free. Let’s dive into some of the key platforms we explored.

Perplexity: Your Research Powerhouse

In the training, we demonstrated Perplexity – one of my absolute favourite tools at The AI Guys. What made this particularly interesting for the startup founders was its ability to not just search, but provide detailed, referenced answers. When we ran some live searches during the session, participants were amazed at how quickly it could compile comprehensive market research.

The Claude vs ChatGPT Discussion

This sparked quite a bit of interest in the room – I explained it like having two genius students: Claude as the structured, reliable one, and ChatGPT as the creative thinker. While both are powerful, we demonstrated how Claude typically provides more consistent, structured responses, which many of the founders found particularly useful for business documentation.

Grok: New Possibilities

During the session, we explored Grok 3, which had just been released. The startup founders were particularly interested in its speed and deep research capabilities. Even on the free tier, we were able to demonstrate some impressive results.

Real-World Applications We Explored

The ScanGuardian Example

One of the participants was working on an AI-powered security solution for mobile devices. We used this as a live example to demonstrate how these tools can help with:

  • Market research using Perplexity
  • Name generation and validation
  • Logo creation using multiple AI platforms
  • Competitor analysis

This real-time demonstration showed just how quickly you can go from concept to initial branding using AI tools.

WhatsApp Integration

This was a highlight of the session – we demonstrated our WhatsApp AI system that can handle everything from image generation to company research. The founders were particularly interested in how this could be applied to their own businesses, especially given WhatsApp’s growing role in business communications.

Practical Tips from the Session

The “Free-First” Approach

One message that really resonated with the startup founders was how much you can achieve without spending anything. We demonstrated several tools where the free tier provides ample functionality for a startup:

  • Perplexity for market research
  • Grok for analysis
  • ReCraft and Ideagram for visual content
  • Various AI models through NotDiamond

Content Creation Workflow

We showed how we at The AI Guys handle content creation:

  • Starting with video content
  • Converting to text
  • Using AI to structure articles
  • Generating consistent visuals

The founders particularly appreciated seeing how this could save hours of work while maintaining quality and consistency.

Looking Forward

The session concluded with a look at automation possibilities using tools like Make.com. We demonstrated how different AI tools can be connected to create powerful automated workflows – something that particularly interested the more technically-minded participants.

Resources for Participants (and You!)

During the session, we shared a resource page with all the tools mentioned (link.aiguys.ltd/essexuni). This includes:

  • Direct links to all tools discussed
  • Access to Make.com
  • Airtable templates
  • Google Sheets integrations
  • Links to various AI APIs

Next Steps

If you’re interested in implementing any of these tools in your business, I’d recommend starting with the free tiers and experimenting with one tool at a time. The startup founders in our session found this approach most manageable, especially when juggling other business responsibilities.

Remember, AI should enhance your business operations, not complicate them. Start small, focus on specific use cases, and build from there. As we saw in the session, even simple implementations can lead to significant time savings and improved efficiency.
